Row, Row, Row Your Boat … A Spiritual Perspective

Row, Row Row Your Boat
Gently Down the Stream
Merrily, Merrily, Merrily, Merrily
Life Is But a Dream.

Rowboat-SpiritualPracticeThis delightful 19th century nursery rhyme most likely originated out of American minstrelsy. The earliest known printing of the song was in 1852, with lyrics similar to lyrics used today, but with a different tune. It was reprinted two years later using the same lyrics, but with yet another tune. The modern tune was first recorded with the lyrics in 1881, in The Franklin Square Song Collection with Eliphalet Oram Lyte credited as the composer or adapter.

We decided to wrap a blog around it because it fits perfectly with one of our central spiritual messages:

We are eternal spiritual beings having a human experience!

We believe you’ll see how well it fits when you see our metaphysical interpretation of its timeless message.

Here are the lyrics of the song with their metaphysical interpretations:

OarsRow, Row Row: Fully align, consciously entrain; subordinate

Your Boat: Your human self, your egocentric nature

Gently: Willingly, freely, readily, unquestionably

Down the Stream: in sync with your Divine Nature, in the flow of Divine Order

LifeIsButADreamMerrily, Merrily, Merrily, Merrily: trusting, intuiting, knowing, faithing it

Life: that each of your many dimensions of being

Is But a Dream: is a state of consciousness on your journey toward Self- Realization.

The song’s full metaphysical interpretation looks like this:

Consciously align your human nature, willingly and readily, with your Divine Nature, trusting that each of your many dimensions of being is an evolving state of consciousness on your journey toward Self- Realization.

Our skin school experiences prune our overall conscious awareness of who we really are if our embodiments are the result of a restless and sense-addicted egocentric orientation. Essentially, if we are too worldly, we choose small-mindedness over open-minded universal awareness. We manufacture separation instead of oneness. And that’s what gets us into each skin school experience.

As we become more awakened and illumined we remember that we are spiritual beings who have chosen a human experience and work toward re-aligning our human personalities with our Divine Nature. As we become more aware of our True Nature in any given skin school experience, dormant soul forces begin to become enlivened, revitalized, and increasingly expressed. These soul forces are super-conscious spiritual energies that prompt us to actualize our full spiritual potential.

Rowboat-Metaphysical-InterpSo, shall we row our boats and go gently, happily and faithfully toward enlightenment – and help others do the same … as together we “row down the spiritual stream” in practical “boats!”
