Christmas and Spirituality: A 2014 Bethlehem Moment

One of the most beautiful songs sung at Christmastime is O Little Town of Bethlehem. So, in honor of its traditional lyrics and music we thought we’d add a little more depth to its historical significance and highly religious tone by offering Bil’s metaphysical interpretation of the song, which focuses on the spiritual unfoldment within each of us — and Cher’s rewrite of the song to reflect the metaphysical meaning. We hope you’ll enjoy!

BethlehemO little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie,

‘Narrow is the gate’ or ‘extremely fine-tuned is the superior human perspective’ (O little town) that is able to attain a consciousness of expanded spiritual awareness (Bethlehem). It is from that ‘still point’ of inner clarity (how still we see thee lie) that we recognize the Christ Presence in human form as us.

Above thy deep and dreamless sleep, the silent stars go by.

This inner clarity is only possible when we raise our awareness above the ego’s chloroformed worldly perspective (deep and dreamless sleep), which finds it difficult to grasp higher spiritual principles (silent stars).

Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light.

Yet in spite of a blind ego’s material attachments (dark streets) the Christ Light (everlasting Light) shines within.

The hopes and fears of all the years, are met in thee tonight.

Our psyche’s natural striving for the truth (hopes and fears) during many incarnations (all the years) finally rents the veil of duality and separation (are met in thee tonight).

Nativity-worldFor Christ is born of Mary and gathered all above.

The heightened awareness of our Christ Nature (Christ is born) comes from our superior intuition (Mary) which is the product of a spiritually-attuned consciousness (gathered all above).

While mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love.

This heightened perspective does not come from worldly thoughts (mortals sleep), but from highly developed spiritual insights (angels) that are aligned (keep their watch) harmoniously (wondering love) with universal truth principles.

O morning stars together proclaim the holy birth.

A consciousness filled with such highly-evolved spiritual beliefs (morning stars together) is able to recognize (proclaim) our divine inheritance (holy birth).

And praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth.

Our thoughts, words, and actions (praises sing) epitomize our oneness with the Eternal Presence (God the King), and exemplify the tranquil tone (peace) of all of the thoughts (men) in our waking consciousness (earth).

peace on earthHow silently, how silently the wondrous gift is given!

Even before we are consciously aware (silently) of our innate divinity (the wondrous gift) the Christ Presence expresses Itself in human form as us.

So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His heaven.

Every fiber of our being has divine origins (God imparts) that are synthesized through the love center (human hearts) which elevates our human consciousness to its deeper, more expanded Christ potential (His heaven).

No ear may hear His coming, but in this world of sin,

However, an unreceptive mind (no ear) makes us oblivious to our divine heirship (His coming). And that explains why the ego’s sense-oriented perspective (world) is a consciousness restricted by the gravity of error (sin).

Where meek souls will receive him still, the dear Christ enters in.

Regardless of our human limitations we have an inborn, nonresistant side of us that is filled with inviolate thoughts (meek souls that receive him) that savor the evolutionary ‘memory’ of the Christ pattern within us (the Christ enters in).

O holy Child of Bethlehem descend to us, we pray.

It is because of the expanded spiritual awareness (Bethlehem) of the indwelling Christ Presence (Holy Child) that we declare our indivisible connection (we pray) with our Higher Self.

Cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today.

From this elevated state of awareness we affirm our ability to transcend (cast out) any and all forms of duality and separation (sin) as we proclaim (be born in us) our oneness with our Christ Nature.

angelWe hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell.

We conceive (hear) at a Christed level of knowing (Christmas angels) the truth of who we really are (great glad tidings).

O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel.

And from this thoroughly grounded understanding (come to us), an understanding that resonates at every level of our being (abides with us), we affirm the activity of Spirit’s I-am-ness (our Lord Emmanuel) as our ruling consciousness.

**************************

We hope you enjoy Cher’s metaphysical lyrics (just 2 verses!), so you can actually sing O Little Town of Bethlehem using the traditional melody.

Trumpet Ornament on Sheet musicExpanded is my Consciousness; I am the Christ as me.
The world of fear does not live here,
the Deeper Truth I see.
Though I may think in error, I let my Christ light shine.
I live the Truth and claim my Good, I know I am Divine.

I know within the Truth I am. I’m worthy and Divine;
Let error go, For this I know ~
I let my Christ Light shine!
I live in Truth proclaiming ~
The Christ as me stands tall!
May all I think, and say, and do
bring joy and peace to all.
