“I’m Where I’m Supposed to Be” – Or Not

A young woman, still a little over-weight by her own standards, looks back over her years of struggle with controlling her weight.

A high school principle assesses his inner city school’s national ranking in scholastic improvement.

A group of entrepreneurs prides itself in how far it has come in one year.

A 92 year old retired CEO settles into his chair at an assisted living facility.

A young married couple looks at their current standard of living and their combined income.

All of these people have one thing in common – besides being referred to in this blogcast. They believe they’re exactly where they’re supposed to be.

PuppeteerTheir assumption is based on the belief that there’s something or someone ‘out there’ that pre-determines where they’re supposed to be, when they’re supposed to be, what they’re supposed to be, and how they’re supposed to be.

They have what we call a ‘puppeteer mentality.’ They are people who believe they are micro-managed by a cosmic puppeteer who determines what their lives are supposed to be like.

Remember Shari Lewis. (We’re dating ourselves – and perhaps you too). She was an American ventriloquist, puppeteer, and children’s TV show host who was most popular during the 1960s. She and her alter-ego Lamb Chop appeared many times on the Arthur Godfrey Show and Captain Kangaroo.

By 1960 she had her own TV show. Lamb Chops’ friends included Hush Puppy, Charlie Horse, and Wing Ding. It is not a stretch to say that Shari micro-managed every move Lamb Chop made. Every position Lamb Chop took was exactly where the puppet was supposed to be. Shari made sure of that!

You probably remember Jim Henson, of course. He was the most widely known puppeteer in American television history. He created the Muppets and was the leading force behind their long runs in the TV series Sesame Street and The Muppet Show.

Bert and Ernie, Kermit the Frog, and Fozzie Bear made Henson’s shows successful because they did what they were supposed to do. After all they were only puppets! And puppets have puppeteers.

terry-fatorOne of the most recent puppeteer phenoms is Terry Fator. He’s the amazingly talented ventriloquist who won the top prize on America’s Got Talent, signed a Vegas deal that’s reportedly worth $100 million plus, and performs nightly at The Mirage in Las Vegas. That’s not too shabby for a puppeteer who not so long ago was playing half-empty shows at county fairs with his alter ego Winston.

No Strings Attached!

A puppeteer is a person who manipulates an inanimate object — a puppet— in real time to create the illusion of animate life in an inanimate thing. The puppeteer may be visible to or hidden from the audience.

Puppeteers operate puppets indirectly by the use of strings, rods, wires, electronics, or directly by their own hands placed inside the puppet or holding it externally. Lamb Chop, Kermit, and Winston all had puppeteers attached to them. There were strings attached, you might say!

When you sat down to look at this blog, were you attached to a string? No, of course not! From a spiritual perspective there are no strings when it comes to being who you are and standing in your own truth!

There’s no white-bearded, white robed God out there separate from us, or controlling cosmic force out there keeping track of every move we make or manipulating us with cosmic strings or wires.

Choices-ca21697612We are spiritual beings who have chosen a human experience. We have free will. We have the power of choice. We are wired for choice!

If you believe you’re “exactly where you’re supposed to be or should be” and that people are exactly where they’re supposed to be or should be” — we invite you to “stop shoulding on yourself and on others!”

People are not where they are supposed to be, or should be, or ought to be, or had better be. None of us are puppets on a string. We are where we are because we have chosen to be where we are!

We are the puppeteers, not the puppets. We are in control of our thoughts, inclinations, words, choices, and actions! If there’s any strings involved at all, it’s the string of spiritual thoughts, words, and actions, that bring us the inner peace, health, and prosperity we seek.

So, puppeteers, we invite you to create the future you want by exercising your power of choice and claiming your independence from worry, fear, anger, and doubt of any kind. We guarantee you that you can do that. And that guarantee comes without strings!
